And so it came to pass that the Progressive Conservative party, who’s hold on Alberta had lasted over two score and four years, came to an end.
With their leader’s accusatory claims that the people must “look in the mirror” in regards to their failing economy hot in their minds, it was no surprise that people were willing to vote for anyone who could promise something better for the province.
Seeing her opportunity, Rachel Notley gracefully won the hearts and minds of the voters. The fact that she did so without resorting to the expected “mudslinging” only made it easier. Even so, political analysts and news agencies were speechless to find that she not only crushed the former ruling party to a mere 11 seats, but also won a majority government, in what most have dubbed an “orange tide.”
Will she balance the budget, improve healthcare and education, revitalize and diversify Alberta’s economy, and make headway with reconnecting with the First Nations people of Alberta, all while improving the environment within the next three years? Only time will tell.
I was so shocked when I heard this. And hopeful. I’m excited to see some change. My family is hand wringing, but fuck it, I’m excited.
