My theory for the different time periods, is that you are part of a vault that when you entered it, you entered a cryogenics chamber and were frozen until it was relatively safe to leave the vault. I think the game will start out where you are an average person but then the explosions come and you have to escape town to the vault and then you have to fight maybe an inquisition soldier here and there to get there. And after that section, you wake up, an you have the main story.
