more on the tannin situation. Just to show you how ridiculous it is, the bucket on the left is the water I just took out of the tank, next tot he water that then went into the tank. the water is not dirty, exactly, that’s not from fish waste or anything, it’s stained by tannins in the soil and possibly wood (though I am doubtful about that, both pieces were in my 80 gallon for like 2 years before this), in the tank. Below is the before and after photos of the tank. I mean, the water is still stained, but it is noticeably lighter. Look, you can see i got some new Crypt Tropica and Crinum in the back! The tannins are not bad for the fish, they are perfectly happy in their tea water. It has anti-bacterial properties and lowers the PH and hardness of the water (I live in Calgary, we have liquid rock for water. from the tap, it has a PH of 8.2. in the tank it is 7.5, and I have done nothing except have the soil, wood and a single almond leaf in there) but it’s just gotten to the point that it’s so brown that the plants can not get enough light if i want to keep anything other than floaters, Crypts and Anubias.
