In contrast, look at what McKelvie and Wilson manage to do in three arcs of Young Avengers.
We start off with the outfit most people draw America in, which she wears for the first five issues (which all take place in one day, more or less). (with these red combat boots I think?)
Then in #7 we have this jean cut-off, grey American flag baggy sweatshirt combination with a star belt, and brown boots. The sweatshirt ends up a little worse for the wear.
At the end of #7, America is wearing black pants with a red horizontal striped shirt and a blue jacket that’s either a tracksuit jacket or a letterman jacket maybe? and really awesome sneakers. And she wears that for the remainder of the arc, because they are stuck dimension hopping while chasing The Patri-Not and don’t go home to change.
When we catch up with them in #11, she’s wearing some sort of a one-piece leggings thing that extends up to her chest, with this awesome drapey crop-top over top of it. And when it’s time to go fight, she just throws a leather jacket on top of that, with stars on the lapels and that red & white vertical stripes + one big star on the back.
And finally, for the After-Party, she combines the black shorts from that first outfit that’s becoming her costume with the leather jacket from the last arc, along with a red and white vertical striped button-up blouse.
Granted, this all happened across 14 or 15 issues and an extended period of time, and it’s entirely possible that we’ll start to see this sort of variation in her outfits once again, but it would be cool if one of the defining features of America were that each artist got to add to her wardrobe while staying within the overall template of colour scheme/style that Jamie established.
ETA: this is re: the ossification of that first outfit into a ‘costume’ recently but also Ramón Pérez’s excellent new outfit for America in All-New Hawkeye #2 which is black jeans and a white shirt and this new jacket with badges or patches on the sides of the shoulders that look like red circles with stars in the middle. Yes please more of this.
The idea was that she didn’t have a costume, but rather a bunch of themed outfits. That’s how I saw her style. But I sort of expected the first outfit to be codified as her costume because that’s generally how superhero comics and artists work, and I couldn’t exactly make those choices for other people who would be drawing her after.
