I dunno about anyone else i follow or who follows me, but I’ve never met anyone who thinks themselves superior because they watched the movie of something. People who think they’re superior because they’ve read the book and only the book and treat fans of the movie the way one would treat dog poop they just stepped into, though? Dime a dozen.
Should we get rid of the Avengers cartoon too? Because how dare kids who are too young to go see the movie *or* read the comics call themselves fans. Clearly, only the most serious of “true fans” who owns every issue of the comic ever printed is worthy of laying eyes upon it. *eye roll*
The elitist attitude expressed in this confession is why I stay well shot of Marvel fans, honestly. :/
It’s not just a Marvel thing. You run across this sort of true fan elitism everywhere… of the fandoms I am a part of, DC has this with fans of the old universe being dismissive of fans of the New 52, Daggerfall/Morrowind/Oblivion fans being dismissive of Skyrim fans, (they used to just hate on Oblivion, but now it’s gotten lumped into the nostalgic ‘Elder Scrolls was better before’ group) all OVER the place in music, band vs band rivalries, or if you are a ‘true’ metalhead or whatever… People like to find ways to convince themselves they’re special for finding something before it was popular, even though that’s bullshit.
To the original confessor, it’s entirely natural to have preferences, it’s ok to prefer the comics to the movie, but don’t pretend your opinion is the only one that’s right. And if someone is a fan of the movie and haven’t read the comics, that sort of attitude certainly isn’t going to encourage them to give them a try, it just reinforces the widely perceived notion of an insular and unfriendly fandom, which can only HURT it in the long run. I for one would love to see more ‘fan girls’ (seriously, why single out the girls?), no matter how they became a fan.
