You can always start now! DC’s New 52 is still young, and Marvel NOW! is happening this month. (this week in fact)
And there’s always trades! I know the selection is daunting, but a good comic shop will be able to help you out, or if you post on Tumblr, or go to CBR or someplace and ask for recommendations people will point you in the right direction.
