Armored rino
A while ago I Tumbled an image from Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia (1544) of a bunch of fantastic creatures wearing Speedos. The book was very popular because of the woodcuts it contained. Here is another great image from that same book: “the animal named rhinoceros”, as the German caption states. The decorator emphasized the protective armour of the animal, turning the rhinoceros into a medieval knight. The owner of this copy had the woodcut coloured in, which makes the tank-like animal look like an assault weapon. It must have been a marvel to look at this image in the pre-Zoo era.
