Captain Marvel is DC. You know…. Shazam?

Not anymore :( He has to go by Shazam now and who was Miss Marvel is now Captain Marvel. (From what I’ve heard Marvel was suing DC for using the name Marvel in one of their superheroes so they had to change it. Not certain if that’s true or not though)

Kinda. The fight over the Captain Marvel name is long and complicated. He was owned by Fawcett, who DC sued for similarities to Superman, they won the suit, and Fawcett ended up shutting down. At the time that Fawcett’s Captain Marvel was out of publication, Marvel changed it’s name from Timely/Atlas to Marvel, and they figured it might be a good idea to have a character bearing their name, so they created their Captain Marvel. They were probably figuring they could capitalize on the name of what was at one time the most popular superhero character in the country, since at the time, no one really owned the name, the character was still copyrighted, but the name was no longer trademarked. Years later, DC bought the rights to the Fawcett stable of characters and began publication of a new Captain Marvel book. Marvel sued DC, since they owned the trademark to the Captain Marvel name, and they won. DC could continue to use the character and his name could remain Captain Marvel, but they could not use the name Captain Marvel on the covers, so his book was re-named Shazam! but the character was still called Captain Marvel. Marvel has continually kept a book called Captain Marvel in print in order to hang on to this trademark, even though for a long time, he really wasn’t very popular, and the title has changed hands numerous times as they tried to find a character that clicked with audiences until it finally dawned on them to just give it to Ms. Marvel who was always more popular. So for a long time, both companies had a character named Captain Marvel, but only Marvel could use that name on the covers. After the New 52 relaunch, DC just decided to rename him Shazam to avoid confusion. (even though it creates a problem of him not being able to tell people his name)
