I’ve been reading interviews with Jason Aaron about Amazing X-Men and it has fully put me at ease. I already trusted Aaron a lot, I love WATXM, Thor, and a bunch of his other stuff, he’s never let me down, one of my favorite writers to be sure. But there was always the problem with Nightcrawler of which version of the character he would use. Nightcrawler was for years a fun and adventurous type who also happened to be Catholic, then it got all flipped around and all the fun aspects faded to the background for the most part and it was all religion and angst. bleh. I never liked that. I always liked him best in Excalibur, which remains to this day one of my favorite series of all time. (despite the fact that I normally don’t like Claremont, it’s weird. But I liked later runs too, Warren Ellis’ in particular, even if Kurt’s costume was bizarre) But it sounds like Nightcrawler is the favorite X-character of both him and Ed McGuinness (who described himself as a ‘Nightcrawler superfan’) and both of them loved Excalibur in particular. I kinda figured that may be the case, given that WATXM has much the same tone as old school Excalibur, but it’s a relief to have it confirmed. The cast lineup also intrigues me, but I feel Kitty Pryde needs to be in the book. But he said that anyone who taught at the school could also show up in Amazing, so she (and Rachel! we could have an Excalibur reunion of sorts) could pop up. I think what he has planned for Northstar sounds interesting, said he was going to be the voice of dissent, and wanted to get creative with his powers.
