So, one surprising thing and two reassuring things from Stormwatch.

Surprising: “Force” is not a new character at all, it’s Fuji with a different name! :D Saved from Lobdell making him into a low ranking villain lackey in Superboy >.>

Reassuring 1: While disappointed with the alien abduction origin (was hoping for super soldiers again) and the fact that they still have real names (and Apollo now has a LAST name too, Pulaski) they do share an origin, and they did escape from their creators… though not at the same time, so that’s good(ish). Also, Apollo is beautiful and dislikes clothes, as it should be, and he and Midnighter are already together. It was SUCH a relief to see Midnighter in his old costume again. Apollo’s is a bit different, but I am fine with it.

Reassuring 2: Though difficult to show with just a couple panels, Starlin NAILED Angie’s personality, she’s awesome again :D Also she started out with no nanites over her skin, presumably to show that she is not, in fact, a robot or cyborg with very little human left, like Milligan was writing her as. (seriously, she was all metallic in flashbacks to BEFORE the Devolver while IN BED)

That’s not to say there weren’t things I didn’t like, I’m still very unsure of Jenny Soul, and I don’t like that Hellstrike is no longer sentient gas, and am sad to see Hawksmoor go… but… if that’s what I had to trade for rescuing Angie, Apollo and Midnighter, the return of Skywatch (although different from in Wildstorm in many respects, and with some aspects of the Carrier thrown in) and The Bleed, I’ll take it.

Also, it’s good to see Lobo’s being rescued from the butcher job Liefeld did on him in Deathstroke…

I am SO happy to see Apollo, Midnighter and Engineer be more like the versions of the characters that I adored in the original Wildstorm series…one issue in and I’m already thinking that Starlin is the perfect choice to be handling this series, I LOVED the way he wrote these three

SO good to see Apollo and Midnighter being an awesome couple again and seeing the Engineer being her fabulous self instead of being all ‘Skynet’ and wanting to start a robot apocalypse because of…reasons O.O

Yeah. I’ve stuck through this trainwreck of a series since the beginning, every time i thought I was going to drop it, another creative team was announced, and I ended up sticking around, in hopes that maybe THIS time they’d get it right… and Milligan wasn’t bad at the beginning, but it unravelled a whole lot towards the end there… So then Jim Starlin was announced and I ended up sticking it out yet again… I wasn’t really sure what to expect with Starlin. Sci-fi is kinda his specialty, to put it mildly, so I knew that part was a good fit, but… I’ve read stuff by him before, but it was from like the 80’s, I hadn’t read any of his more recent work. I was worried that it may be really dated and he wouldn’t capture the sort of edge they needed… but, though a bit exposition heavy (and guilty of telling rather than showing sometimes) I think he did pretty good, and I suspect the exposition was just to get things rolling the way he wanted as quickly as possible, and won’t be a permanent feature. My 3 favorites are Apollo, Midnighter and Angie, and he did the best with them, so I was thrilled. Angie especially needed fixing SO BADLY (not to mention resurrecting) so it was good that he focused most of the non-exposition bits on her, to show everyone the old Angie was finally back. Apollo and Midnighter only got one page where they interacted with eachother, but it had the right feel to it. Kind of an understated casualness to their relationship, it felt almost like how Warren Ellis wrote them, which is the highest praise I can give.

The art by Yvel Guichet is not spectacular, but I get the sense that there is a good synergy between him and Starlin, it feels like they are very much on the same wavelength here, AND I think he’s an Authority fan. So we won’t have the art actively fighting the story the writer is trying to tell, like I think happened with Miguel Sepulveda, and he understands what the characters are all about, and I will take competent art that serves and compliments the story and characters over super-pretty art that fights it any day.

The real test will be next issue of course, to see how things go now that the info-dump is out of the way, but this issue put me at ease and I’m thinking that maybe we will FINALLY have this series done right.

I just realized today I have a TON of screenshots from Skyrim...

I just realized today I have a TON of screenshots from Skyrim over the past little while, and some are pretty cool. Or maybe just pretty. I ran out of space here so you can see more of the ones featuring my character Aleddor, who is quite fun to play so far, at his Elder Stats page.

I ended up being ported all over Skyrim by quests, first I got shunted up near Windhelm by a Companions quest, then while i was there i got punted down to Markarth by Sanguine’s quest, spent some time there then ended up in a jailbreak and made a run back to Whiterun, there i decided to sit down and finish Sanguine’s quest and join the Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, and (temporarily) the Dawnguard, and FINALLY at, like, level 20, see the Greybeards… so I went to the throat of the World and to Riften to murder an old lady, and then back up to Windhelm when the Dark Brotherhood caught up with me (ironically, just after solving a murder case for the town.) and I woke up near Solitude… I still haven’t finished Sanguine’s quest. But I did do Meridia and Sheogorath’s! I should note that I try to avoid fast travel, so getting shunted all over the damn place is extra annoying. It’s been a rather hectic playthrough, but has provided some nice screenshot opportunities.

"I am a mother of three girls, ages 2, 6, and 8. Two of them are Sandy Hook School students – one in..."

“

I am a mother of three girls, ages 2, 6, and 8. Two of them are Sandy Hook School students – one in first grade, one in third grade. I would like to share with you our experience with Dec 14th and my feelings on gun control.

My third grader has gone thru some deep grief over the loss of her siblings’ friends. She was devastated by the loss of the teachers, especially her principal, Dawn Hocksprung, whom we all loved. She is angry that this has happened, that lives were lost so tragically and that she can no longer go to her school. When she was evacuated that day to the fire house, she did not know if her little sister had survived. She struggles with the concept that there is evil in the world, that something this horrific could happen to this town, to her, to her sisters, to her friends. She is 8.

In addition to the tragic loss of her playmates, friends, and teachers, my first grader suffers from PTSD. She was in the first room by the entrance to the school. Her teacher was able to gather the children into the tiny bathroom inside the classroom. There she stood, with 14 of her classmates and her teacher, all of them crying. You see, she heard what was happening on the other side of the wall. She heard everything. Shooting. Screaming. Pleading. She was sure she was going to die that day and did not want to die for Christmas. Imagine what this must have been like.

With PTSD comes fear – all kinds of fear. Each time she hears a loud or unfamiliar noise, she experiences the fear she had in that bathroom. She is not alone. All of her classmates have PTSD. She struggles nightly with nightmares, difficulty falling asleep, and being afraid to go anywhere in her own home. At school she becomes withdrawn, crying daily, covering her ears when it gets too loud and waiting for this to happen again. She is 6.

Imagine being this age and living like this. My children face their fears every day by getting on the bus and going to school. Would you be able to do the same? How would you feel if these were your children?

Although we are getting help and trying to heal, this will affect us for the rest of our lives. We are thankful that by the grace of god, our children came home to us on Dec. 14. As a family and a community, we are deeply saddened and heartbroken at the loss of so many innocent children and beloved teachers.

We are also furious.

Furious that 26 families must suffer with grief so deep and so wide that it is unimaginable.

Furious that the innocence and safety of my children’s lives has been taken.

Furious that someone had access to the type of weapon used in this massacre.

Furious that this type of weapon is even legal.

Furious that gun makers make ammunition with such high rounds and our government does nothing to stop them.

Furious that the ban on assault weapons was carelessly left to expire.

Furious that lawmakers let the gun lobbyists have so much control.

Furious that somehow, someone’s right to own a gun is more important than my children’s rights to life.

Furious that common sense has gone out the window.

Furious that lawmakers are too scared to take a stand.

The “what if’s” never stop going through my mind. What if this weapon were still banned? What if there weren’t high capacity rounds? What if the shooter had different bullets? I think the carnage would have been a lot less. Yes, there would have been losses. But there would have been time. Time to react and possibly make a difference.

Those children and teachers had NO CHANCE. They did not just get shot. They got blown apart.

It’s time to stop catering to the gun owners and lobbyists and start caring about our children, our families, our teachers, our friends and our neighbors. The NRA does not care about people, they care about money.

I don’t believe that anyone, other than the military, has a right to own the type of weapon or ammo used at Sandy Hook.

The second amendment is not limitless.

Weapons like the AR15 have no place in society. This is simply common sense.

Veronique Pozner, mother of Noah Pozner, killed at Sandy Hook Elementary, gave this statement which I believe whole-heartedly:

“The equation is terrifyingly simple: Faster weapons equal more fatalities. This is not about the right to bear arms. It is about the right to bear weapons with the capacity for mass destruction.”

We are trying to move forward, but there must be change. If our lawmakers cannot make this change, then we, as a people will elect those who will.

”

I dare the Republican members of Congress to take a meeting with her, or any other parent of the victim of gun violence.

we-are-star-stuff: What would happen if the Sun...

we-are-star-stuff:

What would happen if the Sun disappeared?

Stars don’t just go out, so there’s no chance of the sun just turning off. A cloud of some sort of thick interstellar gas could conceivably suddenly blot out the sun, but where such a cloud could suddenly come from defies reason, again, astronomers haven’t noticed any stars in the sky suddenly being blotted out by clouds of gas. So for the sake of argument we are simply going to postulate that in some unknowable way, the Sun simply vanishes one day. What would be our fate?

In short: We’d be hosed. The actual details might be somewhat variable, but it’s still pretty easy to predict. How much does the temperature drop between sunset and sunrise? If the Sun vanishes, it will simply keep dropping at the same rate or an even higher rate as the water freezes out of the atmosphere and Earth loses its cloud cover. At high elevations and arctic areas this means within days the temperature would be several hundred degrees below zero. In the tropics it might take a week or longer, but it’s safe to say that in at most two weeks the entire globe would have cooled to hundreds of degrees below zero, and all surface life as we know it would be impossible. On the plus side, our planet retains heat rather well, so we wouldn’t freeze to death instantly. Also, as light from the Sun takes eight and a half minutes to reach us, we’d have a final few moments of glorious sunshine before our planet was bathed in darkness.

If the sun disappeared, for eight-and-a-half minutes we’d have no idea that the sun had gone. We’d still see it – lingering, like a ghost – in the sky above Earth’s day side. As soon as the last of the sun’s light reached us – eight-and-a-half minutes after the sun itself disappeared – the sun would blink out and night would fall over the entire Earth.

If you were on Earth’s night side when the sun disappeared, you might not notice anything … at first. But then the night sky would begin to change. For example, if there were a full moon – which shines with reflected sunlight – its light would disappear a few seconds after the sun’s light blinked out. Over the course of several hours, the planets would wink out one by one, as they reflected the last of the sun’s light to us.

Not until that instant would Earth sail off in a straight line into space. Einstein’s special theory of relativity tells us that no signal in the universe – not even the tug of gravity – can travel faster than the speed of light – about 300,000 kilometers, or 186,000 miles, per second. Though free from the sun’s gravity, we’d be traveling at the same speed as before – about 18 miles, or 30 kilometers per second. So Earth would be traveling at the same speed as always into eternal night.

Would the Earth be lifeless? No. The Earth itself would remain warm from radioactive decay for billions of years, so microbes deep in the crust would survive. The oceans would freeze over, but they likely wouldn’t freeze solid. Tidal action, volcanism, and the aforementioned heat from the Earth’s core would likely keep some water liquid. Deep sea life, especially that around sea floor vents that don’t rely on the Sun, would very possibly survive or even thrive.

On the surface though, nothing. In fact most of the atmosphere would soon freeze and fall to the earth as snow. Different components would freeze out at different times, so there would be layers of colored snow. The atmosphere itself would also freeze and fall to Earth, leaving us exposed to the harsh radiation travelling through space. The almost airless sky would be brighter than the starriest night on Earth now. The Moon wouldn’t have phases but it would still be visible as a gray ghost hanging in the cloudless sky, dimly illuminated by starlight. In fact the Earth’s surface would likely be stunningly beautiful in a silent still way, like a frozen dream.

We wouldn’t be around to appreciate it though. Some humans might survive for awhile in deep shelters or nuclear submarines, but unless there were a lot of them in a well equipped base, their chances of long term survival would be almost nil. Still, if there was enough of a society left to support an industrial base, maybe humanity would survive. Nuclear power would last forever, and the entire Earth’s surface would be littered with useful artifacts, not to mention frozen food in one form or another.
